About Digimon
Digimon (Digital Monsters) is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Bandai in 1997, originally starting as a virtual pet similar to Tamagotchi. It has since expanded into anime, video games, trading card games, and manga, becoming one of the most recognizable monster-based franchises, often compared to Pokémon.
The Digimon anime debuted in 1999 with Digimon Adventurewhich was produced by Toei Animation in collaboration with WiZ, Bandai, and Fuji Television. It was the first anime series in the Digimon franchise and received numerous adaptations, video games, and spin-offs. Crunchyroll describes the story for the anime:
While at summer camp, seven kids come across seven Digivices and are transported to a strange digital world. In this new world they make friends with creatures that call themselves Digimon who were born to defend their world from various evil forces.
We also had the opportunity to interview the Digimon franchise producer Hiromi Seki at last year’s New York Comic Con. She shared interesting insights about the origins of Digimonits unique evolution system that sets it apart from Pokémonand the franchise’s future with Digimon Adventure Beyond.
